Pocket Radiation Monitors
Pocket radiation monitors are small, handheld, lightweight, low power consumption devices designed for personal safety. They are typically used by first responders, HAZMAT team members, personnel in nuclear power plants, customs and border inspectors, and homeland security agents.
Silicon photodiodes for pocket radiation monitors
Silicon photodiodes are photodetectors without any internal gain and often rely on low-noise amplifiers for better signal-to-noise ratios.
Advantages of photodiodes vs. other photodetectors:
- Most cost-effective for compact detectors
- Lightweight and compact
- Low bias voltage allows longer battery life and smaller heat load
- Immunity to magnetic fields eliminates the need for shielding
Advantages unique to Hamamatsu’s photodiodes:
- Uniform high sensitivity for large area photodiodes
- High flatness of active area allows better coupling of scintillator to detectors
Silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) and arrays for pocket and handheld radiation monitors
TO-8 photomultiplier tubes (PMT) for pocket radiation monitors
Our TO-8 package-based PMT is lightweight and compact, and has high internal gain up to 106 and low noise. It is suitable to integrate into pocket or handheld devices. This type of PMT also comes in modules that include a high voltage power supply (HVPS) and an amplifier.
Advantages of PMTs vs. other photodetectors:
- Cost effective for medium to large size detectors
- Very high gain allows detection of lower energy particles and eliminates the need for costly amplifiers
- Extremely low dark count improves the energy resolution and enables operation at higher temperatures
