Digital radiography

X-ray digital radiography (DR)

Digital radiography (DR) is a form of X-ray image diagnosis that uses an X-ray sensitive flat panel detector instead of conventional X-ray film or an imaging plate (IP) as employed in computed radiography (CR) systems. X-ray flat panel detectors are available in both direct and indirect conversion types. The more common type uses indirect conversion in which X-rays are first converted into visible light through a scintillator, and then the visible light is converted into an electrical signal by light-sensitive pixels in a flat panel sensor.

Hamamatsu's X-ray scintillators (shown to the right) are available on various substrates including amorphous carbon, aluminum, and fiber optic plates. Based on years of experience, our design and manufacturing team has adopted excellent design and process controls so that even our largest customers receive essentially defect-free products. Overall, Hamamatsu’s excellent quality and high volume manufacturing capacity has made us the world's leading supplier of high performance X-ray scintillators suitable for even the most demanding dental, medical and industrial imaging applications.

Scintillator plates

To further optimize the X-ray image sensor design and provide the best performance for digital radiography applications, we can offer our CsI Tl scintillators on various substrate materials including: aluminum, amorphous carbon, and fiber optic plates, as well as direct deposition onto an image sensor.

The brochure below explains the construction of Hamamatsu's needle type scintillators as well as various configurations and substrate options. Key features and benefits of each scintillator option are also described to help you select the most suitable scintillator design for each application.
