Photo ICs for optical link are used in short-distance digital communication applications mainly using POF (plastic optical fibers). HAMAMATSU offers photo ICs designed for relatively high speed data transmission. The peak emission wavelength of an LED for optical link using POF is 650 nm (red color).

POFs have great features including that they are not affected by electromagnetic induction, need no core alignment, are easy to install, low cost, and lightweight. POFs are widely used for short-distance, high-speed communications.
Photo ICs for optical link come with a small lens attached. This lens is designed for POFs and has an aspherical surface so as to efficiently mate with a POF. Care is needed since contact with sharp objects such as tweezers may scratch the lens, resulting in a fiber coupling loss.
See the datasheet to find the absolute maximum rating. A smaller current flow will ensure minimal loss in the fiber output optical coupling over time and provide a long service life.
Currently they are only usable with POFs.
