Fighting Global Warming

Transition of Energy Consumption and Carbon Emissions

HPK has set a new target for reducing our unit energy consumption by at least 18% by 2031 compared to 2013, and is currently promoting energy conservation activities. To achieve this target, we have been incorporating highly efficient equipment and renewable energy, while working on energy saving of buildings in fiscal year 2017. As a result, our energy use per unit of sales decreased by 17.7% compared to the previous year.

Our carbon emissions in fiscal year 2017 increased by 2.0% compared to the previous year, while carbon emissions per unit of sales declined by 5.8%. We have introduced detoxifying equipment to suppress the emission of semiconductor fabrication gases such as PFCs and SF6, which are carbon causing global warming.

Going forward, HPK will promote its energy saving and global warming prevention activities.

Carbon emissions and its ratio to sales

※Carbon emissions refer to a calculation range based on the Law Concerning the Promotion of the Measures to Cope with Global Warming. The coefficient used for carbon emissions from electrical power is 0.417 (value obtained in fiscal year 1990 by the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan).

Renewable Energy Initiatives

We are working to reduce carbon emissions by promoting the introduction of renewable energy such as solar power and wind power.

As of April 2018, we have an installed renewable energy capacity of about 372 kW.

Value Chain Carbon Emissions

To grasp the environmental impact of the value chain, HPK is working on the calculation of Scope 3 (shown below) which is based on the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol.

Going forward, we will expand the calculation scope of Scope 3, improve accuracy, and strive to reduce emissions throughout the value chain.

Carbon emissions

Category Emissions(t-CO2 (%)
Scope1 All Direct Carbon Emissions 12,719 3.4
Scope2 Indirect Carbon Emissions 43,853 11.8
Scope3 Other Indirect Carbon Emissions 313,785 84.8
1 Purchased goods and services (151,373) (48.2)
2 Capital goods (60,243) (19.2)
3 Fuel-and-energy-related activities (not included in Scope 1 or 2) (3,198) (1.0)
4 Upstream transportation and distribution (5,875) (1.9)
5 Waste generated in operations (236) (0.1)
6 Business travel (1,466) (0.5)

※A value chain refers to the full life cycle of a product or process, including material sourcing, production, consumption and disposal processes. Includes the upstream and downstream parts of our supply chain.

※The carbon emission factor we use is Chubu Electric Power's emission factor.

<Third-party verification of GHG emissions based on ISO 14064-3>

In order to provide and disclose highly transparent and reliable information, the fiscal year of 2016 GHG emissions data (Scope 1, 2, 3) calculated by HPK underwent third-party verification by SGS Japan Inc. and HPK was issued a verification report. We will continue to make efforts to continuously improve data reliability and reduce GHG emissions.

Examples of Energy Conservation Efforts

We have made an electricity usage monitor available over our intranet that shows the electricity demands and use at each business facility in real time. This monitor helps each individual employee to work independently to conserve energy.

Law on Reduction of GHGs Emissions

The Revised Fluorocarbons Recovery and Destruction Law, which was drafted for the purpose of preventing global warming caused by leaks of GHGs substitutes, was enacted in April 2015. HPK is promoting compliance with this law by assigning a control number to each relevant equipment and building an internal database for managing that equipment information and inspection records. In each division and business site, we conduct education activities covering laws and regulations as well as internal management methods for the administrators.

Reductions in GHG Emissions

GHG used in semiconductor manufacturing such as PFC, SF6, and HFC have large global warming potential(GWP). We are working to reduce its emissions by installing removal devices and optimizing processes.
