Radiation detection module

C12137

High accuracy, High sensitivity, compact radiation detection module

The C12137 series is a radiation detection module containing a scintillator and MPPC (multi-pixel photon counter) designed to detect gamma rays from 137Cs (Cesium-137) and the like. The scintillator converts incident gamma rays into visible light, and the MPPC detects the light down to extremely low light levels to measure low-energy gamma rays with high accuracy. The signal processing circuit and A/D converter are housed in a compact case. The modules provide a USB or RS-232C interface. The products include sample software with functions for setting measurement conditions, acquiring and saving date, and drawing graphs, etc.

Features
- Gamma ray energy discrimination
- Modular design for easy integration into devices
- Compact and lightweight

Features

Detection of low energy gamma rays and energy discrimination

Measurement example (C12137)

The C12137 series is capable of acquiring an energy spectrum as well as providing accurate energy discrimination. 137Cs is known to decay while emitting gamma rays at energies around 662 keV and around 32 keV. Acquiring an energy spectrum down to low energy gamma rays around 30 keV allows determining whether those gamma rays are derived from 137Cs . When the energy of gamma rays entering a scintillator falls to a low level, the light level emitted from the scintillator in response to the gamma rays is also very low. The C12137 series uses a high sensitivity MPPC that allows detecting gamma rays over a wide range.

* C12137 series do not include a PC.

Easy integration in devices

Schematic cross section (C12137-01)

This radiation detector module contains a scintillator, photosensor (MPPC), signal processing circuit, and interface circuit, all inte-grated into a compact package that can be easily assembled into portable measuring devices and inline measurement devices. The MPPC serving as the photosensor in the C12137 series is small and has a thin profile, so it takes up only a small share of the available space. The scintillator, on the other hand, takes up the main share of space. This means that high detection efficiency is achieved even in this small radiation detector module. The compactness of this radiation detector module is advantageous in applications such as inspections of foodstuffs, beverages, and marine products where the radiation from objects under measurement is extremely low. This is because such applications usually require covering the peripheral area of the radiation detector with lead in order to eliminate effects from environmental background radiation. However, the C12137 series radiation detector module is small, so the amount of lead needed for shielding can be reduced which in turn makes the equipment smaller and lighter.

Sample software included

Sample software screen example

Hamamatsu also provides sample software for initial evaluation of our radiation detector modules.Basic sample software functions are setting measurement parameters, acquiring and saving data, and displaying measurement data graphs. To help users develop their own application software for operating our radiation detector module while installed into equipment, we also provide function specifications and source codes of the sample software.

* The C12137 series can be connected to a PC via USB or RS-232C. Graphical display of acquired data is available only for USB type.
