DNA塩基対(A/T、G/C)を形成している水素結合は加熱することにより切断されますが、冷却することにより再び相補的に結合が形成されます。この性質を利用し、DNAを材料としたナノ構造物を作製することが可能です。相補DNAの修飾やA、T、G、C配列を工夫することにより、DNA構造物の任意の位置にナノメートル精度で化学物質、タンパク質、二重らせん構造などを配置することが可能です。
植物や藻類など光合成を行う生物は、光合成反応の為のエネルギー(電子)の逆反応により微弱な光を発しています。これは、遅延蛍光と呼ばれ、生体内で電子を伝達する分子一つ一つに対応したフォトンを検出することができます。このフォトンの発光量や時間分布を解析することで、光合成分子の挙動をリアルタイムに捉え、その機能を評価することができます。植物・藻類の生育診断や品種改良への活用が期待されています。
主要部品を内製化した優れたコストパフォーマンスを有するフェムト秒パルスレーザの2光子励起顕微鏡への応用を目指しています。フェムト秒パルスレーザは、発振器部、増幅器部ともに偏波保持ファイバレーザであるため高安定かつ、空間伝送部分が少なくコンパクトであることを特長としています。
光を利用し、農作業の効率化と農作物の品質向上に繋がる技術として、植物情報や栽培環境の計測技術の開発に取り組んでいます。
植物状態診断では、農作物の可視~赤外領域の分光測定を基に、植物体内の成分含有量を推定します。成分含有量から、施肥量や収穫時期の推定、収穫物の品質評価を行います。
硝酸イオン濃度モニタリングでは、深紫外領域(約210 nm)の吸光度を指標に、植物の生育に必要な硝酸イオン濃度をモニタリングします。養液量を同時に測定することで、植物の吸収量を推定でき、肥料の適量施用が可能となります。
自家蛍光によってカビの検出が可能となりました。自家蛍光波長が菌種で異なるため、スペクトルから菌種識別の可能性が示唆されています。また、カビ菌叢や胞子自身が紫外蛍光を出すこと、複数の蛍光ピーク比からカビ生死を判定できることを見つけました。農業・食品衛生・医療分野への展開が期待できます。
さらに、嫌気‐脱窒条件で起こる脱窒菌の可視光増殖阻害を発見しました。重要な点は、酸素呼吸条件下では、この阻害が認められないことで、呼吸、増殖制御と青色光が関連しており、関連遺伝子やメカニズムを明白にすることは、微生物の発酵制御・創薬などへの応用展開が期待されます。
