私の部署では創薬スクリーニングシステムFDSS(Functional Drug Screening System)の開発を行っています。FDSSは創薬研究用途に使用され、主なお客様は製薬メーカーとなります。
FDSSを使うことで、何百万もある薬の基となる化合物サンプルから、人に対して効果的な薬を見つけ出すことが出来ます。例えば、国民病と言えるほど患者数の多い「高血圧」、「糖尿病」に効く薬の開発へ使用されます。また、近年話題になっている「iPS細胞」を分化させた心筋細胞を使用して、薬の安全を確認するための評価にも使用されており、今後の最先端医療を支えていくうえで重要な装置だと私は考えています。
実際にFDSSは高い市場シェアを誇っており、お客様から高く評価いただいています。現在は製薬メーカーに限らず、様々な研究機関や大学とも共同研究も進めています。
学生時代、私は分子生物学を専攻していましたので、その経験を活かしてお客様側の立場に立った開発を行っています。お客様がやりたいことは何なのか?をお客様目線で考え、明確化することで、それに合ったアプリケーション開発を行っています。新しいアプリケーションについて社内実験したり、バイオ関係のお客様と共同研究もしています。私の場合は、直接お客様にお会いしてお話する機会が多いので、お客様の技術サポートや、マーケティングに基づいた新製品開発にも携わっており、仕事内容の幅は非常に広いと思います。
海外には、ヨーロッパ、アメリカを中心に年間3回程度出張に行きます。英語は得意ではなかったのですが、配属当初に海外出張先のセミナーに行った際、当日急遽発表することが決まってしまい、とても焦ったことを今でも覚えています。その際は周囲の協力もあって何とか乗り越えることができましたが、今後は焦ることがないよう、毎週社内教育の英会話で勉強してスキルアップを目指しています。
当社の強みは光学機器メーカーとしてハイレベルな検出器(超微弱光検出器)を持っていることだと思います。
FDSSの検出器には当社製EM-CCDカメラを使用しておりますし、要素技術が社内に全てあることで、開発をスムースに進めることが出来ています。過去、他社製装置を使用されていたお客様から装置感度が足りないといった相談を受けたことがありますが、当社装置で解決できたときは当社の技術力の高さを実感しました。
また、光学設計、機構設計、回路設計等の各分野のプロフェッショナルが社内にいて、何でも相談し易い環境なので、カスタム要望に柔軟に対応できるのも強みだと思います。社内が一丸となって解決策を考え対応していくことで、お客様に喜んでいただくことが私の仕事のやりがいです。
将来はアプリケーションエンジニアとしての道を極めたいと考えています。お客様からの要望を聞くだけでなく、自分なりの考えを融合することで、誰も思いつかないような全く新しい製品を提案して世界を驚かせてみたいです。
お客様はもちろんのこと、職場の同僚に対しても、常に謙虚な姿勢で接することを心がけています。周りの協力なしには仕事はできませんので、どんな時も低姿勢で謙虚に学ぶ姿勢を大事にしたいと思います。
