近赤外線は、可視波長域に最も近い特性を持った赤外線領域の電磁波のことです。目で見える可視光線よりも波長が長く、遠赤外線よりも波長が短いという特性を持っています。近赤外光は、人体に照射しても悪影響のほとんどない安全な光で、私たちの身近でも、テレビやエアコンなどのリモコンや、光ファイバやワイヤレスデジタル通信などの光通信に活用されています。
「光」である近赤外線は、図2のように、検査対象物に当たると、「吸収」「透過」「反射」「散乱」といったふるまいに分かれます。光が物質に当たると、その一部分は物質中に入り込んで「吸収」され、熱エネルギーに変わります。もしぶつかった物質が透明な場合は、内部で吸収されなかった光の成分が「透過」して、再び物質の外側に出てきます。また、物質の表面が鏡のように滑らかな場合は「反射」が起こりますが、表面が凸凹の場合は、「散乱」します。近赤外検査では、対象物の組成により異なる光の透過・反射・散乱特性の違いを近赤外検出器で可視化し分析します。近赤外検査は、被ばくのリスクがなく、光のエネルギーも低いため、今後さまざまな分野への導入が予想されています。
