素粒子の謎を解明するための加速器を使った高エネルギー物理学実験、あるいは宇宙の解明に迫るための人工衛星での宇宙γ線観測、そういった学術研究分野で主に使用される、SSD(Silicon Strip Detector)と呼ばれるセンサーの設計・開発を担当しております。SSDの構造はフォトダイオードと同じですが、違いは対象が光ではなく、粒子という点です。SSDを一言で言えば対象を荷電粒子とした位置検出素子となります。
2013年にノーベル賞受賞で有名になりましたが、ヒッグス粒子を発見したCERN LHC加速器の検出器にも当社製のSSDが多く使用されております。私は元々宇宙や素粒子物理に興味があり、その分野に何らかの形で貢献したい、という思いで当社を志望しました。その為、お客様から今まで見えなかった物理現象が見えた!という報告をいただけると非常に励みになります。一番嬉しかったことは、やはりヒッグス粒子の発見、ノーベル賞受賞が決まった時です。自分の関わっているセンサが受賞に貢献でき、本当に嬉しかったです。
私の仕事内容は、大きくは特注品対応と開発業務に分かれます。
SSDは基本的に特注品が多いので、お客様からの要望を伺い、それに対してどんな提案をしていくかという仕様の摺合せから入り、原価計算をして見積もりを出します。受注が決まれば、CADでのマスク設計から製造、検査、出荷まで、それぞれについて指示をし、滞りなく出荷出来るよう進捗管理をしています。入社後3年目まではプロセス工程での製造業務やマスク設計がメイン業務でしたが、現在はプロジェクトマネージャーに近い形となっています。
もう一つの開発業務については、今までに無いSSDを作るということが大命題になるわけですが、一例を挙げると、今のLHCの10倍となる過酷な放射線環境下でも、10年以上使える非常に耐放射線性の高いSSDの開発を行っております。このような開発案件については自分たちだけでは対応が難しいことが多く、行き詰まることもありますが、長年お付き合いいただいているお客様(物理学者の先生方等)から、様々なアドバイスやフィードバックをいただけるので大変助かっています。時には、次の開発の種を提供していただけることもあり、今後も信頼関係を保てるようお客様の期待に常に応えていきたいです。
配属されて間もない頃、海外のお客様(研究者)が10名ほど来社され技術打合せを行う機会がありました。自分はその時、同席させていただくだけという程度でしたが、目の前で上司とお客様との間で技術的にも非常に難しい内容のディスカッションが英語で繰り広げられ、圧倒されたことが強く印象に残っています。その時は正直この先やっていけるのかなぁと一抹の不安もよぎりました。しかしその後、設計経験や場数を踏んでいく内に自信も付き、気が付くと違和感なくディスカッションに入ることができ提案もできるようになってきているかと思います。確かに科学的な見識や頭の良さでは研究者の方に到底太刀打ちできませんが、ことSi半導体センサに関しては、自分の方こそ専門家だ、という自負を持って気後れしないようにがんばっています。
当社全体で言えることは、光に関することは幅広く何でも取り組んでいるところが、大きな魅力であり強みであると思います。もちろん一つ一つのパーツとして見た場合にも強みはありますが、会社として光に特化した幅広い技術を持っているので、それらを融合させた時により面白いものが作れる、そういった土台が揃っていると思います。今までもそのような製品はありますが、これからますます当社の幅広い技術を融合させた新製品が出てくると思います。私としても、エンジニアとして、誰もやったことないようなことにチャレンジを続け、斬新なデバイスを開発していきたいです。
新製品開発をしていく際、今までにない工程で作業を進めていく必要がありました。理論的には実現は厳しいとされていたことでも、諦めず、繰り返し試作してみた結果、何とか製品化までこぎつけた経験があります。試作を進める中で大きな壁もありましたが、「必ずできる」という強い思いを持ち、とにかく何事も挑戦する姿勢が大切だと私は思っています。

昔からサッカーを見るのが好きで、地元チームであるジュビロ磐田のホームゲーム開催時には、大抵スタジアムに足を運んでいます。とは言えホームゲーム無い日の方がメインですので、大抵は4歳と1歳の2人娘を連れてぷらっとどこかに遊びに行っていることが多いです。近くの公園やショッピングセンター、カラオケのキッズスペースなどなど。これが結構リフレッシュになっています。子守りをしているつもりで実は子どもに遊んでもらっていると言う方が正しいのかもしれません。
