Business domains

Hamamatsu Photonics has created exceptional value for society over a wide range of applications through our core businesses. These include our electron tube segment and opto-semiconductor segment, which develop and manufacture devices such as optical sensors and light sources, as well as modules that integrate these devices with dedicated circuits; our imaging and measurement instruments segment, which develops and manufactures a variety of systems that incorporate these devices; and our basic and applied research that expands the possibilities of our photonics technology. Furthermore, we have added the laser segment as a core business to address a broader range of social challenges and needs.

Electron tube segment

Develops and manufactures optical sensors such as high-speed, high-sensitivity photomultiplier tubes, highly stable and long-life lamps, as well as applied products in these areas. Pursuing the ultimate in performance guided by past experience in fabricating devices for academic research has led to applications in high-precision measurement such as in the medical, environmental, and measurement fields, and their use has even spread to manufacturing, supporting everyday life.

Opto-semiconductor segment

Develops and manufactures opto-semiconductor devices such as photodiodes, photo ICs, and image sensors. Our opto-semiconductor products incorporate unique semiconductor process technology, mounting and packaging technology, and MEMS technology, and cover a wide range of wavelengths. They are used in diverse fields such as medical care, scientific measurement, communications, consumer electronics, and automotive electronics.

Imaging and measurement instruments segment

Develops and manufactures systems that integrate light detection, imaging, and image measurement technologies with optical sensors, such as opto-semiconductor devices and electron tube devices, as key components. We provide specialized systems that combine core products, such as cameras, with peripheral technologies and equipment.

Laser segment

Develops and manufactures laser products in-house, including excitation laser diode modules, customized laser application products, and laser engines. We leverage synergies with the technology of NKT Photonics, which was acquired in 2024, to deliver even higher-value-added products.

Basic research and applied research

Conducts a wide range of research including basic research to explore the essence of light as well as applied research to adapt the resulting technologies and knowledge for industrial use, with the aim of continuously exploring how to use light to address social, environmental, and human challenges while expanding the possibilities of light.
