Quality initiatives for automotive opto-semiconductor devices

In recent years, the proportion of electronically controlled devices in automobiles has increased, and many opto-semiconductor devices are installed. High reliability and zero defects are required for installed devices, and in order to achieve this, efforts must be made to create unbreakable opto-semiconductor devices by elucidating the failure mechanism.

Hamamatsu Photonics manufactures automotive opto-semiconductor devices as well as failure analysis system, so it has a system that can utilize its equipment to improve the quality of devices. The Solid State Division, which manufactures opto-semiconductor devices, uses the failure analysis system of the System Division for quality verification and failure analysis. The System Division improves the failure analysis system by incorporating feedback and needs from the Solid State Division, which reflects the perspectives of semiconductor device designers. In this way, internal feedback cycles are used to improve product quality.

Reliability verification

Some automotive opto-semiconductor devices manufactured by the Solid State Division undergo reliability tests based on AEC (Automotive Electronics Council) standards for reliability of in-vehicle electronic components. In addition, tests are conducted until the devices are broken, and limit investigations and subsequent analyses are performed.

Examples of verification during mass production

Failure analysis system

The following inspections and verification are conducted during mass production of products.

・Automatic visual inspection (wafer/package level)
・Wafer probing (high/low temperature)
・PAT (Part Average Testing)
・SPC, yield monitoring, defective product analysis *

* IR-OBIRCH/luminescence/heat generation analysis using an emission microscope in the Systems Division

The failure analysis system manufactured and sold by the System Division is developed and improved based on the opinions of in-house semiconductor designers. The use of in-house opto-semiconductor devices for newly developed equipment enables early testing and verification.
