Principle | LCOS-SLM (optical phase modulator)

Our LCOS-SLM (optical phase modulator) is a device that can freely control the phase of the laser beam electrically. The phase of the laser beam can be controlled in two dimensionals by a structure in which liquid crystal is sandwiched between a CMOS chip in which pixel electrodes are arranged in two dimensions and a transparent electrode deposited on a glass substrate. The digital images output from the PCs are converted to analog signals by a dedicated drive circuit, and voltage is applied to the pixel electrodes on CMOS chip. This voltage tilts the liquid crystal molecules and changes the refractive index of the liquid crystal, thereby controlling the phase of the light irradiated to each pixel.

 

LCOS-SLM that can control the phase of light with high accuracy in 8-bit are used in a wide range of applications, from research applications such as the generation of optical vortices to industrial applications such as aberration compensation in microscopic observations and micro-code marking by multipoint branching.

 

In recent years, LCOS-SLM has been drawing attention as a tool for creating new added value in laser applications by combining a laser beam with a dramatically improved power and repetition rate with a phase control technique that branches the focal point into multiple points.
