Social contribution

Basic policy

Hamamatsu Photonics regards its true goal as the discovery of scientific breakthroughs that benefit society. As they devote themselves to developing groundbreaking photonics technologies and related applications, our employees always bear foremost in mind the higher goal of wielding those discoveries in the service of communities, society and humanity.

Artistic and cultural activities

Once a year Hamamatsu Photonics convenes the Hamamatsu Conference. This conference serves as an opportunity for the Company to contemplate and discuss new directions in serving society. It is also a forum for explaining to communities, in plain, jargon-free language, the significance of the Company’s leading-edge research on photonics technology.

The Hamamatsu Conference

The Hamamatsu Conference, which has been held annually since 1984 in conjunction with Japan’s Culture Day, broadly embraces the theme of “light.” It introduces how cutting-edge research in opto-science and technology contributes to everyday life, while also providing a space for participants to explore new cultural ideas together.

iSAP Hamamatsu: International Symposium on Advanced Photonics

iSAP is an international symposium aimed at the discovery of new physical phenomena and the promotion of industry based on those discoveries. It discusses advanced photonics research, such as ultrafast and ultrahigh-precision optics to better understanded the essence of light.

The theme of each symposium is decided by the symposium chair.

The Graduate School for the Creation of New Photonics Industries

Since the beginning of the 21st century, the pace of economic and industrial globalization has accelerated. For decades Japan has built the foundations of its economic might by learning from the academic and technological advances of foreign countries and developing its own technological innovations and applications on that basis. Today Japan stands on the brink of a new direction. We have reached the stage where we have to create new industries, in turn giving rise to new cultures, and communicate them to the world. The Graduate School for the Creation of New Photonics Industries, established by the Company and its partners, focuses on the study of photonics. The School’s priority is to develop people with entrepreneurial spirit capable of creating new industries by harnessing the unlimited potential of light.

Hamamatsu Medical Imaging Center, Hamamatsu Medical Photonics Foundation

We aim to contribute to a healthy and long-lived society by enabling the early detection and early treatment of diseases such as cancer and dementia through optical technology. With this goal in mind, the Hamamatsu Medical Photonics Foundation was established in 2002, founded by Hamamatsu Photonics. Currently, the "Hamamatsu Medical Imaging Center" is set up within the premises of Hamamatsu Photonics Central Research Laboratory, conducting various examinations, diagnostics, and clinical research centered on PET scans. With the slogan "Aiming for a healthy and long-lived society where people do not die from cancer and do not suffer from dementia," we are committed to our mission.
