Presenter:  Wey-Wey Su

Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) instruments have long played an integral part in the laboratory benchtop for a wide range of different spectroscopic chemical and molecular analyses. Traditionally, the large size and slow measurement speed of these instruments have limited their application from measurements on assembly lines or out in the field. To address this, Hamamatsu had released the C15511-01, a miniaturized FT-NIR spectrometer capable of measurement rates of 11 Hz across the spectral range of 1100 to 2500 nm. Through integrating a micro-electrical-mechanical systems (MEMS) mirror, the FT-NIR spectrometer fits in the palm of one’s hand. The special mirror design of the C15511-01 offers unique advantages in wavelength accuracy and measurement stability relative to other alternative implementation methods.

Recently, Hamamatsu has developed a second iteration of the FT-NIR spectrometer, C16511-01. The C16511-01 adds Ethernet communication connectivity to the device, increasing the maximum measurement rate from the previous 11 Hz to 275 Hz. Additionally, the new FT-NIR spectrometer allows more flexibility in data processing, offering different apodization functions alongside multiple zero-fill levels for measurement spectrum output. These new capabilities alongside its vastly improved speed will improve the applicability of the FT-NIR spectrometer to new field and assembly line measurements of a wide range of materials including food, plastics, and minerals.
