Hamamatsu Photonics has received the ATLAS–CMS Joint Industrial Award from the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). This award recognizes our long-standing contribution to supplying key devices for the ATLAS and CMS experiments in the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) project at CERN.
CERN is an international research organization where scientists from around the world come together to explore the fundamental nature of the universe and matter using state-of-the-art particle accelerators. In addition to advancing research into unexplained phenomena and developing innovative technologies, CERN contributes to scientific progress through international collaboration with research institutions worldwide and the training of future generations of scientists. CERN is currently preparing for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC), an upgrade project designed to significantly increase the collision rate of protons. The HL-LHC will enable unprecedentedly precise measurements of the Higgs boson and a wide range of other particles and physical phenomena, providing deeper insights into their properties.
Hamamatsu Photonics has supplied hybrid modules and silicon strip detectors for the ATLAS experiment. For the CMS experiment, the company has mass-produced 8-inch silicon pixel detectors (8PADs) used in the construction of a large-scale silicon detector system covering approximately 1,000 square meters. In addition, Hamamatsu Photonics has provided a variety of photonic semiconductor devices, including avalanche photodiodes (APDs), MPPCs, and LGADs for high-precision particle timing measurements. Through these contributions, the company has supported the development of increasingly sophisticated and large-scale detector systems that enable CERN's research activities.
These efforts date back to the era of the original LHC experiments that preceded the HL-LHC and contributed significantly to the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, which was later recognized with the Nobel Prize in Physics. For several decades, Hamamatsu Photonics has contributed to the advancement of particle physics through the development and supply of optical sensors supporting both the ATLAS and CMS experiments.

The long-term supply of key devices for the ATLAS and CMS experiments has been made possible through our close industry–academia collaboration with the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK). KEK is an important research partner of CERN and maintains a presence on site, where many researchers are actively engaged at the forefront of scientific research. Our close collaboration with KEK has enabled us to fulfil CERN’s stringent technical requirements while meeting demanding development schedules.
This award is the result of strong partnerships with KEK and many other collaborators. Hamamatsu Photonics will continue to strengthen this collaboration and support CERN’s research activities going forward.
