Research and development

Changes in our society, industry and personal lifestyles are happening at a pace unlike anything ever seen before. A host of innovations are appearing one after another in underlying technology fields such as AI (Artificial Intelligence), IoT (Internet of Things) and robotics. Photonics technology is also evolving along with this flow of innovations. Creating applications that utilize light and quantum technology is becoming ever more essential for accelerating the pace of progress of these technology fields.

However, the true nature of light is only partially understood. In its unending pursuit of the unlimited potential of light, Hamamatsu Photonics is working on the research, development and commercialization of light and light-related devices for the future. Its goal is to make vast contributions to human health and bring about advances in science and technology.

Exploring the possibilities of light

Key enabling technology to vastly expand industries applying photonics technology

Hamamatsu Photonics takes pride in the fact that photonics technology is a key enabling technology absolutely indispensable for meeting future challenges.

Here at Hamamatsu Photonics we are keenly aware that industries applying photonics technology have an inverted pyramid structure. Our role is to supply a diverse range of photonic devices which puts us at the bottom of the inverted pyramid yet we also provide key enabling technology that enhances performance of end products that rely on our photonic devices.

Along with focusing on evolving technologies for photonic devices that are essential for maintaining a core competitive edge, we will broaden the sphere of our company operations to include optical module products. At the same time, we will expand those industries harnessing photonics technology by co-creating products with our customers and by finding new practical applications for light.

New approaches for sustainable growth

To achieve the major goal of contributing to human health, Hamamatsu Photonics is grappling with creative new approaches to achieve sustainable growth.

As one example of this, to strengthen essential core technologies, our Compound semiconductor Fab. Center has started up operation with the goal of boosting company-wide production capacity of compound opto-semiconductors for markets utilizing infrared light applications predicted to show strong future growth.

To create new businesses that utilize new applications of light we have established the Global Strategic Challenge Center (GSCC) as an organization to promote new business challenges on a global scale while still retaining our original pioneering startup spirit from the time our company was first founded.

During R&D work, we often hope the answers we seek will appear by way of serendipity or an unplanned lucky discovery. One example where this may happen is development of high power lasers for laser fusion power generation that is an unexplored dream technology whose goal has not yet been reached. There you will find the seeds of technology that will support our future.
