Biodiversity conservation
Biodiversity risk assessment
To meet requirements for corporate disclosure such as EU-CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive), we have been preparing our information disclosure with an outside consultant. Our group’s risk and opportunity analysis on biodiversity and ecosystems are under evaluation according to the LEAP approach* etc., which TNFD (Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures) recommends.
*the LEAP approach: It consists of 4 phases, “Locate” corporate’s interface with nature, “Evaluate” corporate’s dependencies and impacts on nature, “Assess” corporate’s nature-related risks and opportunities, and “Prepare” to respond to nature-related risks and opportunities and to report on corporate’s material nature-related issues. This approach can help to discover dependencies, impacts, potential risks, and opportunities between corporate’s activities and nature.
Endorsement of “Keidanren Initiative for Biodiversity Conservation”
In January 2020, Hamamatsu Photonics endorsed “Keidanren (Japan Business Federation) Initiative for Biodiversity Conservation.”

Contribution to local environmental conservation
We recognize the importance of environmental conservation. As part of our efforts to conserve the local environment, our employees have joined tree-planting campaigns, clean-up activities, and so on.
Clean-up campaigns aligned with the Biodiversity Hamamatsu Strategy
Hamamatsu Photonics participates in the “Hamamatsu Biodiversity Strategy,” which aims at biodiversity conservation in Hamamatsu region. We have promoted it through joining environmental activities, such as yearly “Lake Hamana Clean-up Campaign.” In FY2024, a total of 624 employees had joined clean-up campaigns around our offices (15 times) and other environmental events (including Lake Hamana Clean-up Campaign) (5 times).

“Happy Memorial Trees” program
To promote biodiversity and raise awareness of environmental issues, Hamamatsu Photonics has run a unique program “Happy Memorial Trees” since October 2011 which distributes plants to employees who bought a house, married, and whose child enrolled in elementary school. The photos shown here were provided by employees in commemoration of planting. As of FY2024, a total of 1,310 employees had applied for this program since FY2011.
Many trees are planted on our office premises too, and it contributes to beautifying and maintaining the environment. In addition, some offices try to make “green curtains” (sunshade curtains made of vines) in the summer season.
Collection of used toothbrushes
Hamamatsu Photonics has collected used toothbrushes from employees and donated them to an outside organization since FY2019. Points are given to us according to the amount of toothbrushes and used to fund social action works. As of FY2024, a total of 76.8 kg of toothbrushes has been collected since FY2019. Given points in 2024 were donated as funds for river cleaning.
