Example of intraoral DR image using Hamamatsu CMOS sensor.

In the past 20 years, digital radiography (DR) has emerged as a more advanced method of taking intraoral radiographs where a digital image sensor is used for this purpose. Initially, charge-coupled devices (CCDs) were adapted with scintillators to make the first generation of image sensors suitable for DR. However, recently CMOS image sensors have become the industry standard due to the ease of use, reliability, and high image quality they offer.

In recent years, Hamamatsu has developed and adapted essential technologies to their line of CMOS image sensors, including high-resolution needle type scintillators, blemish-free fiber optic plates, advanced CMOS design, low noise power filtering, and other advanced manufacturing techniques. Furthermore, with a patented, ultra-reliable housing and cable design, our CMOS sensors are highly ruggedized and suitable for daily use in the dental operatory.  All of these essential technologies are integrated into our line of CMOS image sensors, which offer beautiful, high quality images. You can learn more about Hamamatsu's CMOS X-ray sensors below.

Hamamatsu CMOS sensors have the lowest required dose among major sensors

In radiography, three essential parameters — dose, resolution, and contrast — must be balanced to obtain high quality images. With this in mind, Hamamatsu designs CMOS X-ray sensors to achieve the best quality images at the lowest possible dose.  Hamamatsu's CMOS sensors employ their own proprietary Csl needle type scintillators, which offer higher sensitivity and better resolution than traditional low cost GOS scintillators. You can learn more about Hamamatsu CsI scintillators by viewing the catalog in the related documents section at the bottom of this page.

Our high performance CsI scintillators are mated to low noise, active pixel CMOS sensors to produce sensors with excellent image quality at the lowest optimum dose among major sensor brands available today as shown on this chart.

Furthermore, by listening to our customers, Hamamatsu has developed a wide assortment of CMOS image sensors suitable for the most demanding DR system designs. These sensors are ideal for dental and veterinary imaging, as well as industrial radiographic use such as electronics inspection, etc. The selection guide below provides a quick overview of our most popular standard products suitable for each application. In addition, Hamamatsu can offer a wide range of customizations including colorful housings, your branded logo, different length cables, and special high-resolution scintillators (note: minimum order requirements and other business terms may apply).

Please review the table below then contact us to discuss your unique requirements. We will be glad to customize one of our advanced CMOS sensors to enhance the look and performance of your intraoral DR system.
