Radiation detection

Radiation detection and monitoring systems are essential for the detection and monitoring of ionizing radiation (alpha particles, beta particles, gamma rays, and X-rays) and neutrons. These systems are typically based on either direct or indirect (scintillation-based) methods of detecting radiation.

Direct detection relies on the detector absorbing radiation by itself. The direct method gives better energy resolution than indirect, but the available detectors are limited in size and can’t be used for large portal systems installed at border patrol locations, for example.

Indirect detection relies on a scintillator converting the radiation to visible light for the detector to detect. Detectors used in the indirect method vary in size from small to large, so they can be integrated into systems ranging from pocket-sized personal monitors to much larger portal monitors. They also offer high sensitivity and are typically lower in cost.

We provide various detectors for indirect detection including MPPC (or SiPM), silicon photodiodes, and photomultiplier tubes (PMT). We can guide you to select the best technology for your application. In addition, we offer complete modules comprised of detectors, scintillators, ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit), and other components. We can also customize products to your specific requirements.

Our detectors and components are used to manufacture radiation monitors, including pocket, handheld and portal.

Radiation Pocket

Pocket radiation monitors

Pocket radiation monitors are small, handheld, lightweight, low power consumption devices designed for personal safety. They are typically used by first responders, HAZMAT team members, personnel in nuclear power plants, customs and border inspectors, and homeland security agents.

Radiation Handheld

Handheld radiation monitors

Handheld radiation monitors are larger than pocket types and typically used as survey meters, HAZMAT equipment and inspection tools. Handheld radiation monitors provide higher sensitivity to a broader energy range than pocket monitors. They can identify or locate radiation sources, and are portable and suitable for demanding environments, such as the outdoors or in cold or hot temperatures.

Portal Radiation

Portal radiation monitors

Large active area detectors for imaging large containers, or vehicles.

When selecting among the different detector technologies, consider these characteristics:

  • Quantum efficiency (QE) or photon detection efficiency (PDE) determines the energy resolution
  • High gain allows detection of low energy ranges
  • Dynamic range determines how wide of an energy range a detector can detect
  • Lower dark count affects the energy resolution and pulse shape discrimination (PSD) analysis, and allows higher ambient temperature operation
  • Fast time response improves the PSD analysis and can better discriminate between gamma rays and neutrons
  • Operating voltage affects the board layout requirements and any special components (ex. capacitors) needed
  • Power consumption determines the power supply requirements and output current
  • Large active area should be matched closely with the scintillator size for better energy resolution
