Terahertz spectroscopy

Terahertz spectroscopy

Terahertz spectroscopy is a new spectroscopic technique capable of obtaining information on intermolecular vibrations and crystals. Because different information is obtained compared to that from wavelengths used in UV-visible and infrared spectroscopy, terahertz spectroscopy is a promising approach to eliminating the problems encountered in conventional spectroscopic analysis.

Main Applications

Quality inspection/acceptance inspection

  • Discriminative evaluation of material deterioration/assessment of good and defective products
  • Simplified screening on receipt of raw materials

Manufacturing process control

  • Evaluation of the fermentation process
  • Real-time monitoring of crystal transition
  • Determination and real-time monitoring of whether or not the target product has been produced in chemical synthesis

Quality evaluation of materials

Quality evaluation of materials

Research

  • Quantitative evaluation of solutes in aqueous solution (evaluation by obtaining calibration curves from refractive index, absorption coefficient, etc.)
  • Measurement of crystallinity and crystalline form (using the sensitivity of terahertz waves to crystals)
  • Evaluation and measurement of highly concentrated solutions (no dilution required)
  • Non-destructive measurement of water content (using calibration curves)
  • Measurement and evaluation of other phenomena caused by intermolecular interactions

Measurement technology realized by terahertz wave

Monitor of crystallinity

Terahertz wave is sensitive to crystallinity, so it is possible to evaluate crystallinity from measurement results that differ from those of conventional measurement methods.

*Evaluation of crystallinity: Determination of whether the material is crystalline or amorphous, hydrate or anhydrate, in crystal transition, or co-crystallized.

Nondestructive measurement

Terahertz waves are characterized by their low energy and minimally invasive nature, allowing measurements to be made without affecting the sample during or after analysis.

Real-time monitoring

To make the most of the non-destructive measurement feature, the system can monitor changes in absorption and refractive index in the terahertz wave band (e.g., water content, chemical synthesis, etc.) in real-time, including crystal evaluation.

Complex refractive index and complex permittivity evaluation

The complex refractive index and complex permittivity can be measured, enabling material analysis in the terahertz wave band.

Quantitative Measurement

Using calibration curves, quantitative measurement of solute and water content in liquids is possible without using chemicals or heating.

*Calibration curves must be obtained in advance.
