FAQs | Photo IC for encoder

What is a photo IC for an encoder?

This photo IC is designed for optical encoders and used in combination with an LED to detect displacement of a slit plate or wheel.

How large should the LED drive current be set?

In order for the encoder to detect object movement, the light-and-dark pattern must have contrast that is larger than a specified level. Light-and-dark pattern contrast depends on factors such as the directivity and uniformity of light beams from the light source and the distance between the photo IC and the light source. The LED emission intensity and photo IC sensitivity also fluctuate with the temperature. In view of these factors, it is recommended that the LED drive current be set 4 times higher than the minimum value of the operating forward current at room temperature.
