産業分野では、原材料の受入検査から最終製品になるまでの製造ラインをネットワークでつなぎ、品質管理の向上や省人化を図る、スマート工場の実現に向けた取り組みが進んでいます。その取り組みのひとつに挙げられるのが製造ラインと分析・検査工程の一体化です。近年、製造業では人的要因による製品の品質問題や、少子高齢化による人手不足が課題として挙げられており、その解決策としても分析・検査工程の省人化は急務といえます。しかし、分析装置を用いた検査工程は、測定の煩雑さやコストの問題から、インライン化は難しいとされてきました。その分析・検査工程のインライン化を後押しする手法として、「LIBS」に注目が集まってきています。
LIBSとは“Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy”の略で、レーザ光を用いて対象物に含まれる複数の元素を高速で分析することができる分光手法です。対象物の表面に短パルスレーザを照射することで対象物が熱蒸発し、プラズマが発生します。プラズマ内で、原子から放出された電子がイオン化された原子と再結合し、元の原子状態に戻る過程において生じる固有のスペクトルを測定することで、物質を元素レベルで判別します。このような複雑な元素情報をAI技術と組み合わせることで、高精度な解析情報を取得することが可能となってきています。

LIBSは試料形質(気体・液体・固体)を問わず、対象物の複雑な測定前処理が不要という特長があります。そのため、インライン化に求められる高速・非接触での検査が可能になるほか、プラスチックや金属、ガラスなど多様な物質の分析ができるため、さまざまな製造現場における検査工程のインライン化への促進が期待されています。

石炭灰のうち、フライアッシュの主要構成元素であるSi、Fe、C、Caなどの波長成分を検出できます。そのため、同様の主成分で構成されている鉄鋼スラグなど、鉄鋼製造時に出る副産物を測定することで、リアルタイムな品質管理の実現が期待できます。さらにフライアッシュに含まれるCの量を計測し、炉の燃焼温度の制御にフィードバックする構想もあります。
鉄鋼製造プロセスのような高温環境では、分析装置を近くに設置できないため、正確な分析・検査が難しいとされていましたが、LIBSを用いることで、遠隔から高精度な成分分析ができます。原材料の選別から圧延工程に至るまで鉄鋼製造プロセスの全工程検査を実施し、品質向上を図ることが構想されています。
リサイクル分野では、より高効率なリサイクルの実現のために、混在した大量の廃材を精度よく判別する技術が要求されています。LIBSを用いることで、目視による成分の特定が困難な素材でも、高精度に判別することができるため、更なる資源の有効活用が期待できます。
