浜松ホトニクスは、テラヘルツ波(※1)の発生原理を解析し量子カスケードレーザ(以下QCL :Quantum Cascade Laser(※2)の出力を高めるとともに、独自の光学設計技術により高効率の外部共振器(※3)を構成することで、0.42~2 テラヘルツ(以下THz、Tは1兆)の範囲で任意の周波数のテラヘルツ波を発生するQCLモジュールを世界で初めて実現しました。
本研究成果により、一つのモジュールで周波数を切り替えて狭帯域のテラヘルツ波を発生することが可能となります。これを応用することで、テラヘルツ波を吸収する成分を含む薬剤、食品、半導体材料の品質評価や非破壊検査、高分子材料の識別などの精度を高めることができます。また、テラヘルツ波を利用する将来の超高速無線通信の実現に向けた革新的キーデバイスとしての応用が期待されます。
本研究成果は、Optica Publishing Group が発行する学術誌「Photonics Research(フォトニクス リサーチ)」の電子版に2月22日(火)付けで掲載されました。なお、本研究の一部は総務省の「戦略的情報通信研究開発推進事業(SCOPE)」の委託(受付番号JP195006001)を受けたものです。
※1 テラヘルツ波:周波数が1THz前後の電磁波で、電波と光の中間的特性を持つ。
※2 QCL:発光層に特殊な構造を用いることで、従来のレーザと異なり、中赤外から遠赤外の波長領域において高い出力を得ることができる半導体光源。
※3 外部共振器:半導体レーザの外部に回折格子を配置し共振器を構成する仕組み。
