2019年2月20日、受賞題目「高性能量子カスケードレーザの研究開発および実用化」に対し、山西正道(中央研究所 リサーチフェロー)、枝村忠孝(同、材料研究室 副研究室長)、藤田和上(同、材料研究室)、秋草直大(レーザ事業推進部)の4名が「櫻井健二郎氏記念賞」を受賞しました。
本賞は、光産業技術振興協会の理事であった故櫻井健二郎氏が光産業の振興に果たした功績を讃えると共に、光産業および光技術の振興と啓発を図ることを目的として創設された賞で、当該分野の新展開に貢献する先駆的な研究成果をあげた者に与えられます。今回は、日本の企業及び研究機関が2008年以降に成し遂げた業績を対象に10グループの中から選考されました。

量子カスケードレーザ※1の動作を基礎から見直し間接注入励起※2や結合二重上位準位構造※3(AnticrossDAUTM)等を発案したこと、単一デバイス内の共振器内差周波発生により、室温動作テラヘルツ発振を実現したこと※4、それらの実用化を通じて最先端の科学技術を支え、今後の光産業の発展にも大きく寄与するものと評価されました。
この受賞を励みとし、当社はこれからも光産業および光技術の発展に貢献できるよう、研究開発、製品開発に取り組んでいきます。
※1 量子カスケードレーザ(QCL): 発光層に特殊な量子構造を用いることで、従来の半導体レーザと異なり中赤外から遠赤外での特定の波長で高い出力を得ることが可能な半導体レーザ光源。
※2 間接注入励起: 当社が考案した量子カスケードレーザの活性層構造の1つで、電子を間接的にレーザ上位準位に注入できるような中間準位を持つ4準位型の活性層構造。注入電子のほぼ100 %をレーザ上位準位に蓄積でき、レーザ発振に必要な反転分布を効率的に得ることができる。従来は、レーザ上位準位に溜めることのできる電子は、注入される電子の50 %以下に留まっていた。
