レーザ励起プラズマ光源(LDLS:Laser-Driven Light Source)は浜松ホトニクスの子会社であるEnergetiq Technology, Inc.(米国)が開発した新しい光源です。
キセノンガスを充填したバルブ内の放電電極間に、集光したレーザ光でプラズマを発生させて発光を維持する方式を採用した世界で唯一の光源です。
レーザによって生成される高温のプラズマからは、キセノンランプと比べて格段に高い輝度と、紫外域から赤外域にわたるフラットな発光スペクトルを得ることができます。
LDLSはバルブ内の2本の放電電極を点灯開始時にしか使用せず、プラズマの維持では電極がまったく消耗しません。これにより、点灯維持に電極を使用・消耗するキセノンランプなどの従来の光源よりも非常に長いバルブ寿命が得られます。
レーザ集光点のみで発光することにより、キセノンランプに比べて発光点が非常に小さくなりました。これは、微小点への集光、光の利用効率の向上、迷光の抑制など多くのメリットがあります。
従来の光源の光を平行光にする場合、ビームの発散角が問題になります。LDLSは、その小さな発光点サイズから、キセノンランプと比較して発散角の小さい理想的な平行光を得ることができます。また、微小領域に効率よく集光する際にもメリットがあります。
