イメージブースタが必要かどうかを決定する要素です。
カメラの撮像コマ数を増加させていくと、イメージインテンシファイアからの出力光量だけでは十分な画像が得られなくなってきますので、高い光量出力を得るためにイメージブースタが必要になります。

光電面に入射した光は、光電面により光電子に変換されます。
入射光に対する光電子への変換効率(量子効率)が高いほど、ゆらぎの少ない画像を得ることができます。測定対象の発光波長により光電面を選択することが重要です。

MCPの電子増倍機能は、MCPゲイン設定およびMCP段数によって映像増強度が変わります。
一般的なCMOSカメラの最低被写体照度は0.1 lx程度ですが、MCP1段タイプでは約1万倍の映像増強度があり、明るさとしては1×10-5 lx程度までの撮像が可能となります。
MCP2段タイプでは約100万倍の映像増強度があり、明るさとして1×10-7 lx程度までの撮像を可能にします。

MCPによって増倍された電子は、蛍光面によって再度光に変換されます。
高速度カメラ対応モデルは残光特性が短いP46を採用しています。

ゲート機能としてゲート信号入力によるゲート動作のON時間制御と繰り返し周波数制御があります。
ゲートON時間内に起こった現象の「瞬間像」を捉えることが出来ます。ゲート時間が短くなると動きの少ない画像が得られますが、光量が減少するため暗い画像となります。
ゲート動作の繰り返し周波数は、測定対象の繰り返しや読み出すカメラの撮像コマ数に応じて同期させることができます。
