現代社会において、解決しなければならない課題のひとつにエネルギー問題があります。現在、日本の一次エネルギーは80 %以上が化石燃料から得られていますが、地球上にあるエネルギー資源には限りがあります。
そのような状況のなか、海水中に無尽蔵にある水素の同位元素 (重水素)からエネルギーを取りだすことができるレーザ核融合 (以下、レーザフュージョン)が、世界的なエネルギー問題解決の切り札として期待されています。また、レーザフュージョンを用いた発電は、二酸化炭素や窒素化合物を排出しないため、持続可能な発展を可能にするクリーンなエネルギーとして、地球温暖化などの環境問題の解決への貢献も期待されています。
・燃料となる重水素は海中から無尽蔵に取ることができる
→レーザ核融合発電の燃料として、理論上、半永久的にあると言われている
・効率的にエネルギーを生み出すことができる
→ポリタンク(20 L)1本分の海水に含まれる重水素は0.6 g。そこから石油換算で250本分のエネルギーを得られる
・レーザフュージョンを用いた発電は、核分裂による原子力発電と比べて、発生する放射性廃棄物の量が少ない
→原子力発電ではウランなどの高レベル放射性廃棄物が発生するが、レーザ核融合発電では高レベル放射性廃棄物は発生せず、従来技術で処理・処分が可能な低レベル放射性廃棄物しか発生しない
・安全性の高い発電技術
→何らかの不測の事態が起きたとしても、レーザによる核融合反応は燃料や電源を切ればすぐに停止することができる
