光電子増倍管(PMT)は、極めて微弱な光を高感度に検出できる真空管の光センサです。入射した光を光電効果によって電子に変換し、その電子をダイノードで増倍して電気信号として取り出します。光電子増倍管は優れた感度、高速応答性、低ノイズといったさまざまな特長を活かして、微弱光の高精度検出が必要とされる、医用イメージング、素粒子物理学、分光分析、産業検査などの幅広い分野で利用されています。

光電子増倍管は光を電気信号に変換するときに外部光電効果を利用しています。外部光電効果によって光電面から放出された電子は、集束電極によって導かれ、ダイノードで増倍された後、陽極から信号として取り出されます。これらの電子の流れと増倍動作は、高度にコントロールされた真空中でなければ成り立たちません。真空の安定性と品質は、電子の運動、信号増幅、そしてデバイス全体の性能に直接影響します。
さらに、この真空技術は製造工程そのものにも欠かせません。光電面の形成や、排気工程における光電面・二次電子面の形成など、PMTの性能を左右する重要な工程にも高度な真空技術が関わっています。

光電子増倍管は、入射窓、光電面、電子増倍部(ダイノード) という主要な構成要素によって成り立っています。
入射した光はまず入射窓を通過し、光電面で電子に変換されます。さらに、その電子はダイノードで増倍され、最終的に電気信号として取り出されます。
入射窓は、外部から入る光をPMT内部へ導くための窓です。
使用する材料によって透過できる波長範囲が異なり、特に短波長側の感度範囲に大きく影響します。目的の光が窓材で吸収されると、光電面まで届かず、検出できなくなります。
光電面は、入射窓の内側に形成された薄い感光膜で、入射した光を電子に変換する部分です。
PMTの感度波長範囲や感度の大きさは、光電面材料によって大きく変わります。
ダイノードは、光電面から放出された電子を増倍するための電極群です。
各ダイノードで二次電子が放出され、その過程を繰り返すことで、微弱な光によって生じた信号を大きく増幅します。
