光電子増倍管に入射した光を電子に変換するパーツです。
光電面に用いる材料の違いによって、変換できる光の波長範囲や変換効率が異なります。光電子増倍管には、10種類以上の光電面のバリエーションが存在します。

多くの光電子増倍管の光電面にはアルカリ金属が用いられますが、それらと比べてそれぞれ特異的かつ優れた特性を実現しています。
蛍光物質でラベリングされた細胞を、溶液と一緒に細い管の中に流すと、細胞はある間隔で管内を移動します。これにレーザ光を照射して、蛍光物質から出る蛍光や細胞により散乱される光を光電子増倍管で観測します。蛍光と散乱光の情報から、細胞表面抗原、細胞周期、細胞絶対数測定、免疫機能、網状赤血球等の各種測定、細胞分離を行います。最近では複数のレーザによる照射やマルチカラー解析、高速化、フローシステムの小型化が進んでいます。
レーザ顕微鏡は、光源にレーザを使用し対象物を測定する光学顕微鏡の一種です。
レーザ共焦点顕微鏡の特徴として、集光点に配置されるピンホールがあげられます。ピンホールで測定に不要な光を取り除くことで、測定対象の焦点面に非常に近い蛍光のみが検出できます。この構造により、光学的解像度や深さ方向の分解能に優れた測定を実現しています。
血液の中には、その人が持つ疾患特有あるいは細菌特有の抗原(免疫反応を引き起こさせる物質)が含まれます。少量の血液(血漿・血清)に、その特有抗原に結合する抗体を試薬として反応させてかつその発光量を測定することにより、疾患や細菌の有無あるいはその程度を判定する血液検査方法があります。
