テラヘルツ波は、波長が長く散乱しにくいため、布、木材、紙、プラスチックや陶器などをある程度透過することが可能です。一方で、金属と水は、表面の自由電子により反射するため透過しません。
他のX線などの放射線と比較し極めてエネルギーが低いため、安全・安心な電磁波として、非破壊検査だけでなくセキュリティの分野でも応用が期待されています。
