テラヘルツ波分光分析装置は、テラヘルツ波発生・検出素子と、全反射プリズムを一体型にした減衰全反射(ATR)分光専用の装置です。環境中の水蒸気の影響を受けず、安定性、操作性が高い分光分析が可能です。
開発品のため、外観は変更となる可能性があります。
測定原理は、減衰全反射(ATR)法を使ったものになります。テラヘルツ波は全反射プリズムの試料測定面で全反射するようになっており、このときエバネッセント光が染み出します。
測定面に試料を置くと染み出したエバネッセント光と試料が相互作用し、テラヘルツ波の反射率が減衰します。この減衰反射率を検出することで試料のテラヘルツ帯の分光情報(吸収係数、屈折率、複素誘電率)を得ることができます。
4つの結晶形が異なる炭酸塩鉱物(アラゴナイト、低Mg方解石、高Mg方解石、ドロマイト)を測定しました。テラヘルツ波は結晶性に敏感な周波数帯なため、テラヘルツ波の吸収スペクトルで結晶形を明確に区別することができました。これにより地球の環境推定に重要な役割を果たす炭酸塩鉱物の判別が可能となります。 その他にも、結晶多形評価は医薬品の開発や品質管理などへの応用が期待されます。

ニフェジピンの結晶と非晶質の割合を変化させ、水中に懸濁させたものを測定しました。テラヘルツ波は結晶形に敏感な周波数帯なため、結晶の量に応じて吸収ピークが増大していることが確認できました。ニフェジピンのような難溶性薬品は、結晶状態では水中に吸収されません。そのため水中での結晶性評価が重要となります。このように結晶・非晶質の定量評価・判別は医薬品などの安定性や溶けやすさの指標となり、医薬品開発や品質管理への応用が期待されます。

プリズム上で牛乳がヨーグルトに発酵する過程を測定しました。テラヘルツ波分光分析装置は、安定性が高く長時間の経時変化の測定が可能です。そのため現在使われているpH計測の変化と同様の傾向で吸収が減少し、変曲点が一致することが確認できました。このようにテラヘルツ波を用いることで、安定した発酵モニタリング測定が可能となります。
