光を制御する代表的なものにレンズやミラー、シャッタなどがあり、光の方向を変えたり、遮断したりします。また、液晶ディスプレイは光の強度を制御することで映像を表示することができます。当社では“位相分布・波面”と呼ばれる光の特長に着目し、長年空間光変調器の研究を重ねて、光の制御デバイスとしてLCOS-SLMを開発しました。光が伝搬するとき、ある時刻に位相がそろっている場所を同位相θにあるといい、それら連続した点を結んでできる面のことを波面といいます。
LCOS-SLMは光の波面を制御するデバイスであり、パソコンにより簡単に制御することができます。液晶の屈折率を面内で変えることにより、光の波面形状を自由に制御でき、レンズや回折格子などの光学デバイスや機能を実現できます。
計算により導出した位相ホログラムをLCOS-SLMに表示してレーザ光をあてると、桜の花を再生することができるようになります。この位相ホログラムと光学配置を変えることで、レンズやミラー、シャッタ、液晶ディスプレイと同様に光を制御することができます。当社はこのデバイスが位相を2次元で動的(1秒間に30回更新)、高精度に制御できる特長を活かして、レーザ加工や補償光学(眼底計測)、顕微鏡、光ピンセットにLCOS-SLMを利用しました。基礎研究としては、ラゲール・ガウスビームと呼ばれる軌道角運動量を持つ光ビームのホログラムによる生成も行っています。新規デバイスの研究開発を行い、より高度な制御やソフトウェアなど、技術の向上を目指しています。
受光デバイスとして、インテリジェントビジョンセンサ(Intelligent vision sensor; IVS)を開発し、応用研究を行っています。IVSは画像の取得から画像処理・信号出力までを1ミリ秒で行う、小型高速画像処理機能付きイメージングシステムです。このカメラの特長は、kHzオーダーのフレームレートで画像を取得し、それをリアルタイムに輝点重心演算などの画像処理できることにあります。ロボットの視覚システムなどにも利用できますが、ここではIVSでの計測結果をLCOS-SLMの制御に用いました。眼底の観察は、瞳孔からレーザを入射させ、ラスタスキャンを行い、戻り光の強度を計測、再構成することで実現しています。ところが、戻り光は角膜や水晶体、ガラス体の散乱を受け位相がゆがんだ形状となります。このゆがみを補正するため、波面計測を行う必要があります。IVSを用いることで、顕微鏡視野角という外乱を受けやすい状況下で、高速な波面計測を実現しました。
当社は、光学デバイスでキーパーツとなる結晶・光学薄膜といった光学材料を内製することが重要と考え、材料の創生を目指していました。現在では、材料の創出から新たなデバイスの開発を行うとともに、培ってきた材料技術を他の試作研究にも技術提供することを目指しています。特に光学薄膜の開発では、LCOS-SLMの応用研究向けに、ミラー・フィルタ・ARコート類の試作開発を行っており、SLMの競合他社では実現できないレベルのデバイス作製に貢献しています。
