藻類や植物のように光合成する生物は微弱な光(遅延発光)を出していて、この発光を計測することによって、その生物の光合成の活性状態などを知ることができると考えられています。私たちは、この計測技術を化学物質などによる影響評価へ応用しようと取り組んでいます。この技術が河川や工場排水の水質評価に応用できれば、将来的には環境に貢献できると思います。
国立環境研究所や各大学機関等と共同研究もしていますが、他社で同様の研究をしているところは少ないと思います。逆に言えば、世界で当社でしかやっていない研究かもしれません。ですので、早く成果を出せるよう日々研究に打ち込んでいます。
従来計測してきた生物とは違う生物をターゲットとして微弱発光を計測する際に、新たな課題が出てくるのですが、その課題を解決するために試行錯誤している時にやりがいを感じます。たとえば、今までは藻類(液体サンプル)の計測を主にしてきたのですが、今後は植物の葉など(固体サンプル)の計測をしていく予定です。サンプルの形状変化に応じて、計測装置を改良する必要があり、その手法を考えています。
中央研究所での業務は単なる「もの」づくりではなく、光産業という新しい「産業」の創成を目指し、日々実験や研究を積極的に行える環境が整っているという点に魅力を感じています。
入社3年目の時に、森林学の研究室と企業の合同フィールドワークに同行させてもらい、真夏の山中で4日間、朝から夕方まで、樹木の葉を計測したことは印象に残っています。普段は研究所内で黙々と実験やデータ解析をしていることが多いのですが、自然の中に入って遅延発光計測をしたり、色々な職種の方(森林学の先生、庭師さん、樹木医さん等)と仕事したことはとても新鮮でしたし、いい経験になりました。
一つ目は、人と協力することや人に感謝することを大切にしています。仕事は1人作業もありますが、社内でも社外でも、誰かと協力して進める場面は非常に多いです。任された仕事をまずはやってみることにしています。
二つ目は、始めから難なくこなせる仕事はほとんどなく、仕事していく中で学びました。
