APDに高バイアスを印加して増倍された光電流と、バイアスを印加せず増倍が発生していないときの光電流の比です。
低バイアス動作型と低温度係数型では同じパッケージを使用していますが、低バイアス動作型は温度係数が大きく、低温では端子間容量が大きくなり応答が低下するため、動作温度の下限を-20 ℃としています。
APDは半導体素子で、光電子増倍管と比べ量子効率が高い、小型化が可能、磁界に影響されない、ダイナミックレンジが広いなどの特長があります。その一方で、ノイズが大きく、増倍率が低いため、極微弱光の検出においては光電子増倍管の方が優れています。
PN接合の順方向電圧をモニタしたり、温度変化を検出するためにサーミスタを用いる方法があります。これによってAPDのバイアス電圧にフィードバックをかけ、増倍率を一定に保ちます。また、APDを定電流で駆動させて、バイアス電圧を自動的に温度に追従させる方法もあります。
PINフォトダイオードは負荷抵抗の熱雑音や、アンプ雑音によって検出限界が制限されます。APDは、内部増倍効果があるため、熱雑音以上に信号を増倍することが可能で、高速・低ノイズの光検出が可能です。
大受光面のSi APDを実現するためには、増倍率を均一にする技術が必要です。現在では10 ×10 mm (S8664-1010)まで対応しています。
受光面サイズ、形状、素子間の増倍率のバラツキ、素子間ギャップなどについて特注品の対応が可能です。標準品として、S8550-02 (4×8素子)を用意しています。
近赤外タイプ (低バイアス動作)のS12023-02の場合、NEP (雑音等価電力)は5×10-16 W/Hz1/2 typ.程度です。
